The setting of GTA 6 has been revealed – here’s everything we know about where the new game is set and how it compares to Vice City.

The rumors were true: GTA 6 is returning to Vice City. But it’s not quite as old-school Grand Theft Auto fans remember it.

As with all modern GTA titles, the map is only getting larger and more immersive, and Vice City itself looks to be just a drop in the bucket.

Where Is GTA 6 Set?

GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, in the United States of America. Leonida is known for its beach resorts, sunny weather, and for being host to the busiest port in the world.

Leonida is perhaps best known for the City of Vice, known as Vice City to many, which is located on the eastern shoreline.

Although Leonida is a fictional location, there are clear inspirations taken from Florida, with Vice City being directly inspired by Miami.

Vice City vs GTA 6

In GTA 6, Vice City has seen more than just a few graphical enhancements. In fact, the main city hub has massively expanded, as seen in this comparison image of Washington Beach.

However, fans will likely be able to visit iconic locations from the series’ past, such as Tommy Vercetti’s Ocean View Hotel safe house.

The hotel itself was visible in the game’s first trailer, and it is likely not the only reference to Vice City’s past that we’ll be able to explore on launch day.

Unlike the original GTA: Vice City, GTA 6 will allow players to explore the rest of the state, including areas that look to be inspired by Florida Keys, and the Everglades.

Also unlike the ’80s setting of Vercetti’s Vice City game, GTA 6 is clearly set in the modern day. In fact, if it follows past Grand Theft Auto titles, we can expect it to be set in 2025.

After all, all recent games in the franchise have been set in the same year that they actually released.

How Does the Map Compare to GTA 5?

A combination of early mapping efforts and leaks indicate that the GTA 6 map will be around twice the size of GTA 5’s playable area.

In addition, one thing that fans are particularly happy to see is that it’s not just the revamped Vice City that we’ll be spending most of our time in.

Fans have already begun mapping out the GTA 6 playable area, and it seems as though the upcoming title will have several city locations to explore.

This is a major change from the GTA 5 map, which featured the city of Los Santos at the southern end of the island but featured very few locations of interest on the north side of the map.

What’s more, we can see that the Vice City we once knew has expanded significantly.

Just look in the background of the iconic GTA 6 balcony party shot and you can already see a far more immersive and detailed city landscape than the one that first arrived on PS2 back in 2002.

We’ll have to wait until GTA 6’s Trailer 2 releases to find out more about the state of Leonida. After all, Rockstar Games tends to show off a lot more of its game worlds, as well as introduce our new protagonists, in its second trailers.

We’ll keep this article up-to-date with all the latest information as it arrives, so stay tuned!
