The first GTA 6 trailer is finally live after over a decade of waiting, but what song can fans hear in the background of Trailer 1?

The internet still isn’t over the incredible first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, and it’s caused a surge in popularity for one song in particular.

What’s the GTA 6 Trailer Song?

The song in GTA 6 Trailer 1 is “Love Is A Long Road” by Tom Petty.

Initially, the song was released as the B-side to the iconic “Free Fallin’,” and it would go on to appear on Petty’s first solo album, Full Moon Fever, which was released in 1989.

After featuring in the GTA 6 reveal trailer, “Love Is A Long Road” streams on Spotify skyrocketed by an insane 36,979% compared to the week prior. It now boasts over 36.3 million streams on the platform, and countless more on other music streaming platforms.

On December 8, 2023, just days after the GTA 6 trailer went live, the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers YouTube Channel re-uploaded the official song, which has already been played over 4.4 million times.

Is There a Deeper Meaning?

GTA is a franchise known for its iconic music, and there’s a chance that the choice to use Tom Petty’s track has a deeper meaning for the upcoming game.

Several fans have made the connection between the title “Love Is A Long Road” and the fact that GTA 6’s male and female protagonists appear to be in a relationship.

Lucia and her partner (thought to be named Jason) appear to be a Bonnie and Clyde-style couple whose relationship will likely be tested in the GTA 6 storyline.

It’s worth noting that GTA 5’s second trailer used Stevie Wonder’s “Skeletons,” thought to be a reference to main character Michael’s secret past.

However, the music in Trailer 1, “Odgens’ Nut Gone Flake,” by Small Faces, was purely instrumental with no deeper meaning to grasp.

Who Is Tom Petty?

Thomas Earl Petty was an American singer/songwriter who was known for his work in rock bands Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Mudcrutch.

He also appeared in the supergroup the Traveling Wilbury’s, as well as making waves as a solo artist.

Tom Petty was perhaps best known for the song “Free Fallin’,” which has been listened to over 662 million times on Spotify, or for his other popular tracks, including “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” “Wildflowers,” and more.

Before Petty passed away, he had sold over 80 million albums, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Alongside his career in music, Petty was also an actor known for being the voice of Lucky Kleinschmidt in King of the Hill. He also appeared as himself in the 1997 film The Postman, as well as in an episode of The Simpsons.

Tragically, Tom Petty died of an accidental overdose in 2017, at the age of 66.
