You’ll need some games to play while you’re waiting for GTA 6 to come out. These are some of our favorites!

While Grand Theft Auto 6 promises to be one of the best games of all time, the release date is still a long way off. So, until then, you’re going to have to fill your time playing something else.

Fortunately, there are plenty of other games that can scratch the same itch as Grand Theft Auto, whether you like action-packed crime stories, robbing banks, or just creating chaos in a large open world!

The Best Games Like GTA to Play Before Grand Theft Auto 6

Yakuza 0

Yakuza 0 Kiryu With Brass Knuckles

Yakuza 0 is the perfect jumping-on point and arguably the best game in the entire series.

A prequel to the first Yakuza game, 0 has you play as series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu as well as fan favourite recurring character Goro Majima. And while it has plenty of differences from Grand Theft Auto, there’s plenty for GTA fans to love in this huge action-adventure crime drama.

The story centers around the infamous Yakuza crime syndicate in 1980s Tokyo and Osaka and will have you gripped from start to finish, with twists, revelations and mysteries aplenty.

Despite the serious main story, the Yakuza 0 also has a load of ridiculous and hilarious side content for players to enjoy, similar to GTA. This includes joining a cult, racing miniature cars, and helping world-famous popstar Miracle Johnson with a music video.

Where Yakuza differs from GTA is that there is no driving, the combat is almost entirely melee-focused, and the open-world areas are much smaller. However, the hand-to-hand fighting is excellent, and the maps feel truly alive and have dozens of things to do!

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 V Next to his Car

While it had a very rocky launch (and that’s putting it lightly!), Cyberpunk 2077 is now one of the best games of the past few years. The 2.0 update in late 2023 added the final polish and some highly requested features, finally making it the masterpiece it always should have been.

Even if Cyberpunk 2077 has a near-future setting and very in-depth RPG systems compared to GTA, it also has plenty of similarities to Grand Theft Auto.

A stunning open world, action-packed combat, solid driving mechanics, and some wacky side missions make it a game that any Grand Theft Auto fan could appreciate. It even has a very similar dark sense of humor to GTA!

Payday 3

Payday 3 Heist

If you enjoy the heists in GTA 5 and GTA Online, then why not try a game that’s all about pulling off heists?

Payday 3 is all about working together with your teammates to pull off audacious robberies. It has a number of different heists to pull off, ranging from your classic bank robbery to infiltrating a highly guarded penthouse to steal some state-of-the-art technology, giving some variety to the missions.

There are also a number of different ways to tackle each heist and varying difficulty options, making these heists very replayable, especially if you squad up with your friends!

Currently, there aren’t too many levels, but there will be a number of updates throughout 2024, adding new DLCs and content to the game. Or, if you don’t want to wait for new content, you could also give Payday 2 a try!

Watch Dogs 2

Watch Dogs 2

While the first and third Watch Dogs titles received mixed reviews, Watch Dogs 2 is underappreciated and a game that many haven’t given a chance.

Set in a bright and vibrant San Francisco, which is full of Silicon Valley parody and satire, Watch Dogs 2 is essentially a high-tech Grand Theft Auto.

In addition to solid shooting and driving mechanics, you also have the ability to hack technology like cars, computers and even people’s smartphones. This makes for some interesting gameplay and differentiates it from the other GTA-like games.

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs Wei Shen

When it comes to open-world crime games, Sleeping Dogs is perhaps the most underrated of them all.

This often-overlooked title throws you into Hong Kong’s seedy criminal underbelly and has a gripping story full of twists, turns and a surprising amount of heart.

While Sleeping Dogs has solid driving and shooting mechanics, as you’d expect from an open-world crime game, its standout gameplay feature is the Arkham-style melee combat.

Protagonist Wei Shen has expert Kung Fu skills, which makes for some extremely satisfying hand-to-hand combat, and you can even use the environment to take down enemies in brutal ways.

While Sleeping Dogs may be a little old now, the remastered Definitive Edition of the game is still a blast to play, even in 2024!

Just Cause 4

Just Cause 4 Rico Wingsuit

Just Cause 4 is the game for you if you love all of the chaos in the Grand Theft Auto series.

It drops you into an absolutely colossal map and lets you cause all of the destruction and mayhem you want with an arsenal of fun physics-based gadgets. The grappling hook and wingsuit combo never gets old, and neither does using tethers and rocket boosters to send enemies and vehicles flying!

The simple story acts as more of a guide of where to direct your chaos, but it’s still worth playing through because the gameplay is just so fun.

Mafia 3

Mafia 3 Night Time LMG

Mafia 3 is probably as close as you can get to Grand Theft Auto in modern gaming without playing one of Rockstar’s games.

Set in the Deep South in the late 1960s, Mafia 3 has a distinct feel and atmosphere compared to other games within the genre.

Even if the gameplay is pretty standard for an open-world third-person shooter, the story is really where it stands out. Protagonist Lincoln Clay’s story is truly compelling, and the narrative is full of deep and interesting characters, making it well worth a playthrough.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 Bank Robbery Bandana

Finally, you’ll definitely want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 before GTA 6. Even if you’ve already completed it, it’s worth another playthrough!

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best single-player games of the last console generation and perfects the open-world Wild West experience.

The story is compelling, the writing is excellent, and all of the characters are deep and interesting. This, combined with the vast, beautiful and immersive open world, as well as the satisfying and weighty gunplay, make it a joy to play.

As to be expected from Rockstar Games, there is also plenty to do in terms of activities and side missions, as well as a whole load of secrets to find!

GTA 6 will almost certainly take a lot from Red Dead Redemption 2 in terms of gameplay and story. Therefore, there’s no better way to get yourself ready for the next Grand Theft Auto than by playing Red Dead!

Hopefully, these games will keep you busy until GTA 6 comes out – although the wait looks like it’ll be a long one. Rockstar Games could have internally delayed Grand Theft Auto 6!
