Grand Theft Auto VI is arguably the most anticipated video game in history. It’s been an entire decade since the launch of its predecessor, and we’re only just approaching the reveal.

Throughout the many years of waiting for GTA 6, there have been several stories about the game, courtesy of reports from insiders, an abundance of leaks, and official statements from Rockstar Games.

So, without further ado, here’s a timeline of all the GTA 6 news so far, starting from the first time the game was ever mentioned up until the present:

2012 – The First Murmurings

December 13, 2012 – Rockstar’s first visions:

The first time we heard of what Rockstar envisions for GTA 6 was actually before GTA 5’s launch on September 17, 2013.

On December 13, 2012, Rockstar North’s president at the time, Leslie Benzies, didn’t seem thrilled with the idea of returning to Vice City (Miami).

When asked if there’s any chance Vice City might return in a future GTA, Benzies responded:

“It is always a possibility. However, Vice City, perhaps more than any other GTA game, was as much about the era as the setting. Miami in the 1980’s is so iconic it would feel strange to revisit the city in a different time period.”

Well, that didn’t age well. After a massive data breach in September 2022, lots of pre-alpha footage from GTA 6 was leaked, revealing that the game will take place in modern-day Vice City (Miami) and its surrounding areas.

Interestingly, Benzies was more open to reimagining Vice City as part of a much larger world containing all the cities from previous GTA games and letting the player travel to whichever area they wish to revisit.

“Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas, and in that context reimagining Vice City would be very interesting.”

said Rockstar’s former president, Leslie Benzies

While it doesn’t seem like this will be the case with GTA 6, it certainly was a fascinating vision. And who knows? Maybe that’s what they have in mind for GTA 7, as far away as that may be.

October 3, 2013 – the first time GTA 6 was mentioned:

The first talk of GTA 6 specifically came very soon after GTA 5’s release on September 17, 2013.

On October 3, 2013, Rockstar North’s president at the time, Leslie Benzies, was asked about GTA 6 for the first time and said they have “45 years worth of ideas” in mind.

In the interview with Develop, the former Rockstar president was asked:

“And when will Benzies, the Housers and Garbut reform to talk GTA VI? Is there even a GTA VI yet?”

Develop asked

“We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do,” Benzies responded. “We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas.”

For many years, amid GTA Online breaking records and selling over 190 million units in its lifetime, any concrete details about GTA 6 were virtually non-existent.

And little did we know that the game still wouldn’t be here in 2023.

April 15, 2020 – Kotaku’s First Report

Back in 2020, Kotaku released the first substantial report for the next Grand Theft Auto. The report mainly focused on the studio’s workplace culture and revealed interesting details about the next game.

Kotaku claimed that the game was in early development and would start as a moderately sized release (but still large by Rockstar’s standards).

This moderate launch would be expanded upon with plenty of updates over time.

Friday, February 4, 2022 – Rockstar Confirms Development

In an announcement that took the internet by storm, Rockstar kicked off 2022 with confirmation that “active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway.”

While they didn’t explicitly say GTA 6 – and still haven’t – this was the first time Rockstar publicly acknowledged the next GTA game.

July 27, 2022 – Bloomberg Reveals First Story Details

Five months after Rockstar’s first confirmation of the game, Bloomberg released arguably the most extensive report.

This report claimed the game would take place in Miami (corroborated by leaks soon after – more on that shortly), with more locations being added.

Bloomberg also claimed that GTA 6 would feature a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired duo, with the series’ first female protagonist and a male protagonist (also corroborated by leaks two months later).

September 18, 2022 – The Massive Leak

In what’s considered one of the most significant data breaches ever, over 90 pre-alpha GTA 6 gameplay videos were leaked in September 2022.

These leaks confirm it will be set in modern-day Miami and its surrounding areas.

Two protagonists were also revealed: a Latina woman named Lucia and a man named Jason, seemingly confirming Bloomberg’s report just months prior.

The following day, Rockstar issued a statement confirming that early development footage was leaked, and as disappointing as it was, the studio didn’t expect any long-term delay.

May 17, 2023 – Take-Two Seemingly Reveals Release Window

During Take-Two’s Q4 2023 earnings call on May 17, the company announced expectations of setting “new standards in our industry” and “over $8 billion in Net Bookings” in Fiscal 2025 due to the strength of its upcoming release schedule.

Realistically, there’s only one game that can achieve that sort of money – and that’s GTA 6.

Since Take-Two’s fiscal year takes place from April to March, it’s safe to assume GTA 6 will be released between April 2024 and March 2025, based on Take-Two projections.

A Fall 2024 or early 2025 release currently seems most likely.

Wednesday, November 8, 2023 – First Trailer Confirmed for ‘Early December’

On November 7, 2023, Bloomberg released a report claiming the game would be announced that week, with the first trailer coming in December.

The day later, at the bottom of an X/Twitter thread in classic Rockstar-subtleness, the studio announced that the game’s debut trailer is set for ‘early December,’ coinciding with its 25th anniversary.

Friday, December 1, 2023 – Trailer 1 Date & Time Confirmed

Fast forward to the present, and we’re now just days away from the first-ever GTA 6 trailer!

On the day of its anniversary, Rockstar has confirmed the date and time of trailer 1.

And that’s everything in the GTA 6 timeline so far. As we approach the first trailer next month, prepare for more frequent news as Rockstar ramps up its marketing for the highly anticipated sequel.

We’ll update this timeline with all the latest news as soon as it comes.
