GTA 6 is just around the corner, but will players be able to continue playing Grand Theft Auto Online as usual?

There’s no question that GTA Online is one of Rockstar Games’ most successful projects of all time. Initially a multiplayer mode for GTA 5 and eventually launched as its standalone game, the title is still incredibly popular and highly profitable.

In fact, the most recent Take-Two earnings call suggests that the company is set to make $7 billion this fiscal year, a figure that’s likely bolstered significantly by the popularity of GTA Online.

But with GTA 6 set to offer fans an entirely new world to explore, will GTA Online follow suit?

Will GTA 6 Have Online Multiplayer?

Although Rockstar Games has yet to confirm an online component, it is extremely likely that GTA 6 will have online multiplayer.

Like GTA 5, we imagine that Grand Theft Auto 6 will get a version of GTA Online included as part of the full-price experience. However, this has not been confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two Interactive as of right now.

GTA Online Money Man Behind Desk

The reason we’re so certain that GTA 6 will have online is that the existing GTA Online is a huge source of income for Take-Two, even a decade after its release.

Leaks indicate that GTA 6 cost a staggering $2 billion to develop, before marketing costs, and the publisher will be looking to recoup that money and then some.

In addition, Rockstar recently purchased GTA roleplay mod maker, the team behind popular servers FiveM and RedM. With GTA 5 support likely winding down in the near future, this may indicate that GTA 6 Online will come with in-built roleplay features or the ability to better adjust the game’s world for special servers.

GTA 6’s online mode will likely follow in the footsteps of GTA 5’s version, and become a standalone GTA Online application in the future.

But we wouldn’t expect this anytime soon, as Rockstar Games will likely want to boost sales of the full-price GTA 6 for the first few years.

As for whether GTA 6’s unconfirmed multiplayer mode will take over the name GTA Online, or whether it’ll have to adopt a new name, we can’t be sure.

Will GTA Online Servers Stay Up?

There has been no confirmation whether GTA Online (GTA 5’s multiplayer mode) will remain active when GTA 6 launches. However, we believe that it’s very likely that servers will continue to operate.

Right now, GTA Online provides a significant income stream for Rockstar and Take-Two, one we can’t see the team behind Grand Theft Auto looking to abandon.

GTA 5 Online Bed of Money

We do think that fresh content will likely cease for GTA 5’s online component as soon as GTA 6 launches, however, as Rockstar Games begins to focus on supporting the newer title.

Roleplay communities and those who either prefer GTA 5 (or can’t afford to purchase the newer title) will still likely be able to enjoy the existing GTA Online for the time being. But don’t expect those servers to stay up forever!

Will Progress Carry Over?

It is not likely that GTA 6 will allow players to carry over progress from GTA Online.

After all, the upcoming game is an entirely new release, presumably built from the ground up, which would make carrying over content impossible.

When GTA 6 launches, its online mode will probably be a total reset for all players, removing all Reputation levels, money, and owned vehicles.

GTA 6 Lucia and Jason Robbing Store

It’s possible that players who invested a lot of time and effort into GTA Online will get a token of recognition in GTA 6’s online mode, but we wouldn’t count on it.

We’ll keep this article up to date as Rockstar reveals more about the expected GTA 6 Online mode, so check back soon for all the latest updates!
