Grand Theft Auto 5 once took a record-breaking sum of money to come to fruition, but how much did GTA 6 cost to develop?

Those who remember the pre-launch period for GTA 5 might also recall that it broke records for being (at the time) the most expensive game ever made. Analyst estimations report that the game’s development and marketing cost a combined $265 million, a hefty chunk of change.

Of course, seeing as GTA 5 became the fastest-selling entertainment product in history, with $1 billion in sales in its first three days, that budget turned out to be a drop in the bucket.

So the question is, did Rockstar Games spend even more money developing GTA 6? And if so, how much?

What’s the New Game’s Budget?

According to a leak, Grand Theft Auto 6 has already cost $2 billion to develop.

Reportedly, this figure comes from the infamous GTA 6 leaker teapotuberhacker, who published 50 minutes of work-in-progress game footage for the game before being arrested back in September 2022.

Should an official figure be revealed by Rockstar Games or parent company Take-Two Interactive, we’ll update this article.

However, if the $2 billion estimation does come from the leaker, as the chat logs above claim, it’s likely that the figure itself could also be correct.

Not only was the hacker able to access footage of GTA 6 prior to its reveal, but they did so via the Rockstar Games Slack group, meaning that they likely also saw real messages from the development team.

It’s unlikely that we’ll learn an exact figure anytime soon. This is due, in part, to the fact that GTA 6 is still being developed – and marketing hasn’t properly begun for the upcoming title either.

Whatever the Price, It’ll Be Worth It

GTA 5 cleared $800 million in its very first day on sale, and it’s safe to say that GTA 6 could double that figure.

With the price of games increasing steadily over the years, and the popularity of the Grand Theft Auto franchise skyrocketing since the release of the last game, there’s no question that GTA 6 is set to smash all records helped by its predecessor.

Already, the first trailer for the new game completely eclipsed GTA 5’s reveal, and broke some YouTube records in the process.

In fact, we’d personally say it’s a safe bet that GTA 6 will be the new fastest-selling entertainment product in history, a title still held by GTA 5.

Past GTA Budgets vs Revenue

As seen in the table below, while the budget has risen with each entry in the GTA franchise, the revenue has also massively increased.

GameDevelopment & Marketing CostRevenueCopies Sold
GTA 6$2 Billion (Reported)N/AN/A
GTA 5$265 Million$7.7 Billion185 Million
GTA 4$100 Million$2 Billion25 Million

Therefore, whatever Rockstar Games’ budget, it’s likely that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be worth the time and money spent on it.

After all, GTA 5 has now been around for 11 years, and is still generating insane profits from both game sales and GTA Online.

We imagine that GTA 6 Online, whatever that ends up looking like, will be just as profitable as the current online service, which has helped GTA 5 generate over $7.7 billion, according to Tweaktown.
