GTA 5 is the second best-selling game of all time, and Take-Two Interactive just revealed new information regarding how many copies it sold in total.

The Grand Theft Auto series is one of gaming’s most beloved franchises, and its popularity only seems to be on the rise.

Rockstar Games has four of its titles in the list of the fifty best-selling titles of all time, and GTA 5 comes in at second place on that very list. Now, with GTA 6 just around the corner, could it dethrone its predecessor?

GTA 5 Total Sales

In a new Take-Two Interactive earnings call, the Rockstar Games parent company revealed that GTA 5 has sold a staggering 195 million copies.

This comes as no surprise to all those who have been paying attention to sales charts, as Take-Two also revealed that the game is the best-selling title of the past ten years in the USA – both in terms of units sold and dollar sales.

A decade on from its launch in 2013, the latest Grand Theft Auto game still holds the record for reaching $1 billion in retail sales faster than any entertainment release in history, something it achieved in just three days.

Even with these new figures, GTA 5 is unlikely to ever top the best-selling game of all time, Minecraft, which boasts an insane 300 million sales. However, it’s sitting comfortably at number two, at least until GTA 6 comes to dethrone it…

As for why the game has continued to sell so well, it’s worth noting that the latest GTA is still a popular game in the streaming industry, for both GTA Online gameplay and roleplay servers.

The game’s multiplayer still receives regular updates in the form of expansions, and its community continues to thrive.

GTA 5 Laying on a Bed of Money

What’s more, Grand Theft Auto 5 has officially launched on three separate console generations, with many users double-dipping for an upgrade over the years.

The PC port of GTA 5 also dropped over a year after its PS3 and Xbox 360 launch, which meant those who prefer PC gaming had to buy on a console first or wait an agonizingly long time to play the new Grand Theft Auto.

It’s unsurprising, therefore, that GTA 6 won’t launch on PC either, but we don’t expect it to be long before it arrives on the platform.

How Does This Compare to the Rest of the Series?

Alongside revealing the 195 million sales made by GTA 5 alone, Take-Two also revealed that the Grand Theft Auto franchise has sold over 420 million units in total.

Despite GTA 5 being just one of the 11 standalone GTA titles, it accounts for almost half of the series’ total sales. The second best-selling game in the franchise is GTA: San Andreas, which has sold over 27.5 million copies.

GTA 5 Sales Stats From Take-Two Investor Call

Grand Theft Auto 4 comes in at third place for the series, with 25 million copies sold, making it the final entry in the franchise to reach the list of top 50 best-selling games of all time.

And we can’t imagine how much more successful GTA 6 might be, after the game’s first trailer shattered YouTube records by racking up 93 million views in a single day.

The trailer quickly became the most viewed non-music video in 24 hours, smashing the previous record of 46 million after just 8 hours.
