Although Rockstar Games has yet to reveal GTA 6’s file size, we do have a few indicators that reveal just how large the game is set to be.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that GTA 6 will be one of the biggest games of all time, both in terms of hype and overall scale.

The game has likely been in the works for over a decade, given that Grand Theft Auto 5 launched all the way back in 2013. After all, we know development started for that game shortly after the release of GTA 4.

But just how much space will players need to free up on their hard drives before GTA 6 drops?

GTA 6 File Size

Although Rockstar Games has not revealed GTA 6’s official file size just yet, early expectations predict that the game will be up to 200 GB.

After the massive GTA 6 leaks back in 2022, Reddit user Denso95 analyzed the leaked developer build of the game, estimating it to be around 80 GB in size. The user then predicted a final file size for the full release of ‘just under 200 GB.’

Given our analysis of past GTA releases and their exponential growth patterns, we’re inclined to agree. More on that below.

Bear in mind that all estimations that are appearing online are purely speculative for now.

But we’ll get an official file size reveal when GTA 6 goes up for pre-order digitally, likely later this year, as it’ll appear on the PlayStation and Xbox stores.

Previous Game Sizes & What They Can Tell Us

Here’s a list of a few of Rockstar Games’ most recent releases and their respective file sizes:

GameFile Size
Red Dead Redemption 2120 GB
GTA 5111.37 GB
GTA 4 Complete Edition32 GB
GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition19 GB

*File sizes may differ slightly between platforms, or due to game updates

As we can see, the jump from GTA 4 to GTA 5 almost quadrupled the file size of the game, as Rockstar made strides to ensure its newer title was the most immersive yet.

However, while we don’t expect the jump to GTA 6 to follow this trend and push the game to 400 GB, it’s certain to require a substantially larger amount of storage space.

Bearing in mind that GTA 6’s map looks to be twice as big as GTA 5’s playable area, we could see the file size having to reflect that fact.

What’s more, the 2022 leaks indicate that GTA 6 will contain far more interiors to buildings than were present in the previous Grand Theft Auto title, something that is sure to add to the amount of storage needed.

Is GTA 6 Going to Be 750 GB? The Rumor Explained

One rumor suggests that GTA 6 will take up a staggering 750 GB of storage space, but it is likely that this is not true at all.

The leak is completely unsubstantiated, providing no evidence for the absurd file size.

Although Grand Theft Auto 6 will likely be the largest game ever, the thought that it could take up three-quarters of a Terabyte’s worth of space is ridiculous.

For a start, this would render the game unplayable on any day one PS5, which has 825 GB of storage, only 667 GB of which is actually available to use.

New PS5 Slim models, and presumably the rumored upcoming PS5 ‘Pro,’ would have sufficient space, but 750 GB would ensure that GTA 6 is practically the only game you’d ever be able to install.

And while GTA 6 looks to be one of the biggest games ever, it’s worth noting that no game has ever come close to this file size. Here’s a list of some of the biggest games of all time, and their required storage:

GameFile Size
Halo: The Master Chief Collection137 GB
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition120 GB
Red Dead Redemption 2120 GB
Microsoft Flight Simulator157 GB
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare / Black Ops Cold War175 GB
Quantum Break (With TV Pack Installed)178 GB
Ark: Survival Evolved (& DLC)200 GB+

Given that these are some of the biggest games ever made, several of which either come with multiple experiences in one, an included Battle Royale, or full-length TV episodes, it would surprise us if GTA 6 managed to blow past all expectations and hit a whopping 750 GB.

But it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the upcoming Grand Theft Auto reach a more ‘acceptable’ file size of 300 GB, should Rockstar Games need some extra space.
