GTA 6 is making its debut on current-gen consoles, but will Rockstar Games’ new title also eventually arrive on PS4 and Xbox One?

The release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S back in 2020 was heavily affected by supply issues. Even by the end of the following year, gamers were still struggling to get their hands on a ‘next-gen’ console.

Because of these issues, the PS4 and Xbox One lived a lot longer than anyone was anticipating, and some modern games still release on the platform today! But will GTA 6 be playable on the older hardware?

Is GTA 6 on PS4 & Xbox One?

No, GTA 6 will not be coming to PS4 or Xbox One consoles, a fact confirmed by developer Rockstar Games.

In the game’s official reveal via press release, the developer announces:

“Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems in 2025.”

Unfortunately for those that are still on older hardware, GTA 6 will not be playable on PS4 or Xbox One.

Why The Exclusion?

Although neither Rockstar Games nor parent company Take-Two have officially commented on the exclusion of the last generation of consoles, the reason is likely due to the pure ambition of GTA 6.

From what we’ve seen in the game’s first trailer, GTA 6 appears to push the boundaries of what’s achievable in such an immersive open world.

Such an impressive title would need to be heavily downgraded to run on the PS4 and Xbox One, in terms of both graphical fidelity and NPC population density.

Don’t Worry If You’re a PC Player

Right now, GTA 6 hasn’t been confirmed to come to any platform besides PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, a PC port is almost guaranteed, going by Rockstar Games’ track record.

In the case of GTA 5, the official PC port came one and a half years after the initial release on PS3 and Xbox 360. With Red Dead Redemption 2, the PC version was released a year after the console debut.

We’ve done some extensive research and come to the conclusion that GTA 6 is most likely to receive a PC port in 2026. However, nothing is confirmed as of yet.

While the PS4 and Xbox One have survived an impressive 11 years on the market, support for the last-gen consoles is finally winding down.

Although we’ve seen games such as Hogwarts Legacy and the latest Call of Duty titles release on the older hardware, doing so always requires a major downgrade to last-gen ports – and potentially holds back the current-gen versions too!

If you’re yet to make the jump to a current-gen system and fancy playing GTA 6, be sure to upgrade by 2025!
