Grand Theft Auto fans think that GTA 6 should have improved melee combat. After all, who wouldn’t want to have some truly brutal hand-to-hand combat?

While the Grand Theft Auto series is all about driving fast cars and blasting through enemies with an arsenal of weapons, nothing beats an old-fashioned fistfight.

Unfortunately, the melee combat in Grand Theft Auto 5 was pretty barebones and didn’t have much to it. As long as you knew the hit and dodge buttons, you were good to go!

This has prompted fans of the series to request a more detailed melee combat system in GTA 6.

Why GTA 6 Needs Improved Melee Combat

While the melee combat in Grand Theft Auto 5 was perfectly fine, it was certainly more functional than fun.

Additionally, melee is a bit of a problem in GTA Online, where experienced players can easily end up in a melee standoff where they can keep dodging each other’s attacks.

This is why many players in the GTA community are suggesting that GTA 6 should have a more fleshed-out and satisfying melee system.

Fortunately, Rockstar Games has already made games with solid brawling, which it could use as inspiration for melee improvements in GTA 6. Both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Bully have some great features that could take the melee combat to the next level!

Red Dead Redemption 2’s Combat Could Be the Basis

The hand-to-hand combat in Red Dead Redemption 2 was still quite simple but was much more satisfying than Grand Theft Auto 5. The ability to block and grapple gave players more options when brawling with enemies, and it also added a lot of weight to the combat.

Plenty of Rockstar fans agree that an improved version of the combat from Red Dead Redemption 2 would be a great addition to GTA 6 and give plenty more possibilities when it comes to fighting, judging by the popularity of this Reddit post on the topic:

One of these possibilities is being able to grab and throw enemies, which would certainly be a brutal way to handle hand-to-hand combat.

We could see GTA 6 using a system very similar to the simple but weighty melee combat from Red Dead Redemption 2. However, Rockstar Games would have to expand this system to include more types of melee weapons rather than just one-handed knives and axes.

Bully’s Combat Progression Would Add Extra Depth

Looking back further, the often-underappreciated Bully had an excellent system for melee combat, which GTA 6 could take inspiration from.

Despite releasing in 2006, many gamers think the hand-to-hand combat in Bully is the best that Rockstar Games has ever made, thanks to the variety of melee attacks and combos that you could learn. This has prompted players to request a similar system to come to GTA 6.

While it is a slightly less realistic feature, the ability to learn new combos in Bully added a lot of depth to the combat in the game. Players could learn additional moves like a roundhouse kick and a headbutt from completing gym class or finding the transistors around the map.

Even if Grand Theft Auto 6 doesn’t have as many combos as Bully, the ability to learn more types of attacks would be a very welcome addition.

Rockstar Games could even tie it into this highly-requested fitness feature or a Strangers and Freaks side mission where you learn new melee attacks from a highly skilled fighter!

A fan in the comments also made an interesting suggestion that the two protagonists – Lucia and Jason – could have different fighting styles. This would be a great way to make the characters feel distinct from each other and add some extra combat depth.

Hopefully, we will get to see some melee combat in the next GTA 6 trailer. However, it looks like Grand Theft Auto 6 Trailer 2 is still a while away!
