Grand Theft Auto 5 and its trailers could give us an insight into what to expect for GTA 6 – here’s everything you need to know!

Rockstar Games releases are few and far between, which means that when a new release is getting ready to drop, marketing is often very deliberate.

As we wait for GTA 6 to drop its eagerly-anticipated Trailer 2, we’ve taken a closer look at how GTA 5’s trailers were released, and what that could mean for GTA 6.

How Many Trailers Did GTA 5 Get?

GTA 5 got six pre-launch trailers before the game’s official release on September 17, 2013.

The trailer release schedule was as follows:

There are a few things of interest to note here.

Firstly, if you exclude the individual character trailers which were released alongside the ‘Michael. Franklin. Trevor.’ video, that’s a total of six trailers we can potentially look forward to again with GTA 6.

And secondly, we think the time differences between each trailer are extremely important.

What Does This Tell Us About GTA 6?

In the case of GTA 5, Rockstar Games released a single trailer in November 2011 before following up an entire year later with Trailer 2 in November 2012.

Since GTA 6’s first trailer dropped on December 4, 2023, this could mean that we’ll be waiting until December 2024 for any more footage of the game.

In fact, if the gap between Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 is exactly the same with the upcoming Grand Theft Auto, GTA 6 Trailer 2’s release date would be December 17, 2024.

What’s more, we can see that marketing didn’t really start to ramp up until the last 4 months before release.

Since GTA 6 is anticipated to be released in Q1 2025 (going by last year’s Take-Two earnings call predicting massive profits in this time period), fans shouldn’t expect regular trailers to begin dropping until at least November-December 2024.

Of course, GTA 5 was initially set to release in Q2 2013 until a delay announced in January pushed back the launch to September that same year. It’s likely that marketing was pushed back along with the new release date, which could make predictions based on comparing the two games a little tricky.

Do GTA 4 Trailers Tell Us Anything?

GTA 4 had four pre-launch trailers in the lead-up to its April 29, 2008 release.

These trailers were as follows:

If GTA 5 had five trailers rather than six, there’d have been a clear pattern forming here! However, one clear similarity is that trailers began dropping for both GTA 4 and 5 over a year before launch.

If GTA 5 had released in Spring 2013 as initially intended, the time between both games’ Trailer 1 and release day would be even closer, at just 13 and ~16 months, respectively.

Given that Grand Theft Auto’s fifth entry was a lot more ambitious – it makes sense that there’s a larger gap between its announcement and release.

We don’t think that GTA 6 Trailer 2 will drop just 3 months after Trailer 1, as was the case with GTA 4… but we can always hope!

What About Red Dead Redemption 2?

While Red Dead Redemption 2 is no GTA title, it was the most recent major release by Rockstar Games on October 26, 2018.

Because of this, it can therefore give us the best possible insight into the developer’s current marketing strategies.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 trailers were released in the following order:

In the case of Red Dead Redemption 2, there were two full years between the game’s official reveal trailer and its release. What’s more, there was almost an entire year between the title’s first trailer and its second.

This was also the case with GTA 5. Does that mean we shouldn’t expect GTA 6 Trailer 2 until December 2024?

We’d say it’s likely. These were, after all, the last two titles to be both developed and published by Rockstar Games.

Thankfully, we don’t expect to be waiting two years for GTA 6 to release, if the rumors of a Q1 2025 release window are true.
