Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was a turning point for the series, and GTA 6 fans think the upcoming game should bring back this fan-favorite feature.

It’s that point of a new GTA’s marketing cycle where Rockstar Games leaves fans with nothing but silence for months on end. From our careful analysis, we think we know when the next GTA 6 trailer will arrive – and it’s not any time soon.

But as fans wait for any news regarding the upcoming game, the community is left to speculate about features they’d like to see in a new GTA title.

And one popular suggestion has players thinking back to the San Andreas days.

Should GTA 6 Add Fitness & Weight Mechanics?

In a popular post to the GTA 6 subreddit, fans are calling for San Andreas’ weight and fitness mechanic to return in the next Grand Theft Auto.

Showing off a side-by-side comparison of two of GTA 6’s NPC body types, fans suggest that it might actually be possible for characters to change physique once again in the upcoming game.

“I think just based on this trailer, it’s highly likely that GTA SA’s gym/eating mechanics are making return,” Reddit user ShenmueFan1 writes.

In fact, the NPCs above look similar to one another, and have identical sunglasses in Trailer 1. It’s quite possible (though not overly likely) that Rockstar Games is already teasing the popular mechanic’s return.

That said, NPCs in GTA have always had varied and interesting body types, that aren’t always attainable in our main characters, so we’ll have to wait and see!

San Andreas Fitness Mechanic Explained

For those out of the loop, the fitness feature in GTA: San Andreas allowed protagonist CJ to eat food to gain weight, or hit the gym to get shredded.

This was the first (and last) time we’ve seen this mechanic added to a GTA game, and being able to alter how our main character looked was a fun addition to one of the most beloved entries in the series.

CJ Fat and Thin in GTA San Andreas

By working out, players could improve CJ’s Muscle, Stamina, and Lung Capacity stats, and the character would transform to match their level of exercise.

Furthermore, a more muscular CJ would deal more damage in melee combat, and boast increased Respect and Sex Appeal stats. Being overweight, on the other hand, would lead to reduced health and running speed.

But players had to keep CJ well fed too, as not eating would lead to a reduction in both Muscle and Fat. Lose enough, and you even started to see your health decrease!

Don’t Forget About Red Dead

The San Andreas fitness mechanic didn’t resurface in future GTA games such as Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, nor the numbered titles 4, or 5. However, something similar did appear in Red Dead Redemption 2.

In the return to the Old West, Rockstar Games saw fit to include food consumption as a mechanic once more.

By eating too much, Arthur Morgan can gain a significant amount of weight – leading to a significant reduction in his stamina.

Arthur Morgan Skinny vs Fat

As a trade-off though, a heavier Morgan can endure more damage before meeting his end in a fight. On the other hand, not eating much will lead Arthur to appear skinnier, increasing his stamina more than usual – but he’ll be able to take less damage.

Players have to balance out the Red Dead Redemption 2 protagonist by eating just enough to remain somewhere in the average range, if they want to get the best of both worlds. However, unlike San Andreas, there’s no way to hit the gym and bulk up.

We suppose that wouldn’t make much sense back in the days of the American frontier, but it’ makes much’s far more appropriate for Vice City!

Let’s hope the state of Leonida has invested in a few more 24/7 fitness establishments since the last time we were there.
